Wow, that’s pretty strong talk, isn’t it? Dieting is a lie? What do I mean? Well first of all, the word diet is derived from a Latin word that means “lifestyle.” A lifestyle is something you do for life. You may stifle your cravings and manage to lose weight, but if you keep craving food eventually, your powerful subconscious, where the craving is hiding out, will win. That is the cause of “yo-yo” dieting. If you don’t change your lifestyle, that is, the way you feel about food and eating, you are just doing something temporary and that will only have temporary results. You may lose weight, but it will come back with a little more, or maybe even a lot more. Why bother?

Here is another Big Fat Lie that has me seeing RED!!!
I just visited two popular diet sites for large companies that have made a fortune selling their diets. One is using celebrities to endorse their products. I wanted to see a real person who lives like most of us who had lost some weight. No problem, I just clicked on the tab that said “success stories” and there she was, a thin lady who had lost a lot of weight. Unfortunately, right beside her picture is the disclaimer, “Results not typical.” First they show me movie stars and then someone else whose results aren’t typical. Well what is typical and what can the average person expect? I mean people like me and you that have supported these companies for years? The other site did show a regular person, but also promised “you can eat whatever you want.” Really? If people lost weight eating whatever they wanted without changing what they want, they would be overweight, just like they are. That is how they got overweight, isn’t it? Eating what they want is what got most people overweight. The whole secret to the success is that you have to change what you want.

They are selling the wrong message and they know it. Teaching people to eat whatever they want without teaching them how to control what they want is the surest way to keep them fat because as soon as the diet ends they know the habit of eating whatever you want will have you eating the same way you did before the diet. But then again, if you want to keep selling diets you don’t want to really solve the problem that is making so many people fat.

I have to hand it to them, those companies are great at marketing and have made millions off the American Public for many years while we have struggled with weight problems. Let’s be honest, the only way to lose weight is to eat the right foods and in the right amounts and to exercise moderately. We all know that. The only way to do that for the rest of your life is to change the way you feel about food. I mean you have to “want” to eat healthy food in the right amounts or you just aren’t going to keep at it. That means you have to change the way you think and feel about food. How can you change habits developed over a lifetime?

The answer is hypnosis and it works in your subconscious mind. When you go into hypnosis, you will be relaxed, but not unconscious. You will be aware of everything you hear and able to decide whether or not you wish to follow the suggestions given by the hypnostherapist whether you are in the room with the hypnotherapist or just listening to a CD or tape. When I work with a client I help her to place suggestions in her own subconscious mind. In that relaxed state of light hypnosis her subconscious mind is more accessible and open to positive suggestions. The subconscious is the feeling mind and the positive suggestions I give her, based on the answers she put on the intake form with her own personal needs on it, help her to feel like living a healthy lifestyle without a big struggle.

Be careful!! There are companies that mass produce hypnosis Cd’s and tapes and sell them to an unsuspecting public. Those CD’s have generic suggestions on them that are not tailored to your unique needs. My experience as a clinical hypnotherapist and consciousness expert, after working with hundreds of weightloss clients, is that you need a personal one on one session, even if it is just a custom tailored CD. It has to be about you and speak directly to your subconscious mind.
