<p>Nearly everyone at some point in their life has wished to weigh less or at the very least be less flabby and more muscle toned. For many, the thought is fleeting and they never feel the need to pay much attention to weight.</p>

<p>Others become obsessed with losing weight, gaining weight or becoming more tone and muscular. Whichever category a person falls into, it can really wreak havoc on one&#8217;s life. Don&#8217;t take me wrong, I admire a person who sets goals and goes-for-it. But the learning curve can be quite painful for a lot of people and may come with a very high price tag.</p>
<h2>Weight Loss</h2>
<p>Weight Loss seems like a simple endeavor, reduced to a simple equation. Generally, people will often believe that less calories coming in and more going out via exercise and activities is the key to weight loss. In the simplest of terms this could be considered true. However, each layer of practical consideration adds a slight bit of complexity to that seemingly simple formula.</p>
<p>For example, taking in less and less calories can become an obsessive and dangerous behavior. There are entire hospital wings devoted to those with &#8216;eating disorders&#8217;. The obsession with body shape can get very distorted within the confines of one&#8217;s mind.</p>
<p>This warrants a few sentences of distilled wisdom. Nothing about our appearance is so important that it warrants harm to our physical or mental well-being, especially self-inflicted harm. I&#8217;ve witnessed a hospital ward full of unhealthy girls worried about their weight to the point they don&#8217;t eat enough and it is not a happy site to see.</p>
<p>A friend of mine suffered from an eating disorder in high school and she once told me that the only thing that she felt she had control of was her weight. The need to exercise that control was so strong that it overshadowed everything including common sense. Not to judge, I&#8217;m simply sharing her experience with an eating disorder. Hopefully, for the benefit of others.</p>
<p>Eating disorders aside, there are sound principles for weight loss and if you are going to lose weight or are planning to, it might be a really good idea to understand those principles before you start to lose weight.</p>
<p>The dangers of creating an unhealthy situation for our bodies are great enough that one should fully investigate legitimate weight loss techniques as opposed to the unhealthy quick fixes. Weight loss can be a rewarding experience and it doesn&#8217;t have to be a living nightmare.</p>
<p>Just a few key concepts can really make all the difference in the world. Consulting an expert on weight loss could save you time, money and a lot of heartache. The basic lesson is that you can cut down on the learning curve, mistakes and roadblocks and get to your end goal sooner by taking time to learn the &#8216;right&#8217; way to achieve weight loss.</p>

<p>Establishing healthy eating habits for preschoolers includes modeling their eating habits at home so that when they enter the school environment, they can make healthy choices.</p>
<h2>Nutrition</h2>
<p>The guidelines for a nutritious healthy eating plan for toddlers include the 5 major food groups as part of  a daily diet.  Each food group contributes specific nutrients to the diet.  These nutrients are necessary for children&#8217;s growth and development.</p>
<p>1) Bread and Grains: 6 servings a day</p>
<p>These foods provide energy for activity and growth. Children should consume some whole grain products. <p>The number of fruits children should eat is determined by their calorie needs. But the base requirement as outlined in the food pyramid for this age group is at least 2 fruit servings per day.</p>
<p>4) Vegetables &#8211; 3 servings a day</p>
<p>Vegetables provide the important vitamins and minerals to protect eyesight and the body&#8217;s immune system.</p>
<p>5) Meats, Beans &amp; Nuts: 2 servings per day</p>
<p>Meats, beans &amp; nuts provide protein and iron to form muscles.</p>
<p>Parents should limit the intake of high saturated fats or salt (sodium) in the toddler&#8217;s diet to reduce the risk of high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure.</p>

<p>You may think that a program as simple as 5&#215;5 needs no explanation. That is true to a certain extent, as I could tell you to do 5&#215;5 and you would immediately know what to do. However, the program can be (and has been) interpreted in a variety of ways. So let&#8217;s take a look at the three main variations of the 5&#215;5 muscle building workout program.</p>
<h2>Nutrition</h2>
<p>1. Straight sets</p>
<p>This is the classic interpretation of the program. Simply pick an exercise and a weight and stick with it for 5 sets, attempting to complete 5 reps each set. If you end up choosing too heavy of a weight to complete all 5 sets of 5 reps, then stick with that weight when you do the exercise next time. For example: 225&#215;5, 225&#215;5, 225&#215;5, 225&#215;4, 225&#215;3. You are to use the same weight until you can complete 5 sets of 5 reps, and only then increase the weight.</p>
<p>2. Work Up</p>
<p>This variation allows you start with a lighter weight and work up over the 5 sets to your 5 rep maximum for the day. This means that the 5th set is your heaviest. Here is how this might look: 135&#215;5, 185&#215;5, 225&#215;5, 275&#215;5, 315&#215;5. The next week you would come back and try to increase the weight on every set, but pay particular attention to increasing the weight on the 5th and final set.</p>
<p>3. Work Up and Down</p>
<p>This variation is similar to the previous, except that you work up in weight more quickly so that your heaviest set is your 3rd set. Once you hit your heavy third set, you decrease the weight for the 4th and 5th sets. For example: 185&#215;5, 225&#215;5, 275&#215;5, 245&#215;5, 225&#215;5. The next week you would try to increase the weight on every set, but especially on sets 3, 4, and 5.</p>

Examples of these practices include engaging in rigorous physical fitness training, eating a balanced and healthy diet, maintaining ideal weight, and employing an effective stress management procedure. <h2>Nutrition</h2>
<p>Poor health can be caused by a host of different factors, such as poor eating habits, lack of exercise, stress, and excessive smoking and alcohol intake. Unbalanced intake of nutrients, for one, may cause excessive or deficient nutrient intake, which will definitely affect the body&#8217;s normal functions. It runs through the blood and lymphatic system, carries oxygen and distributes nutrients to the cells, and rids the body of toxins and wastes in the form of urine and sweat. If water and its other liquid substitutes are not present in the human diet, food digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste excretion would be impossible.</p>
<p>The human body is made up of two-thirds water. It needs eight to ten glasses of water or caffeine- and alcohol-free liquids to replace the water it loses during the day. The body&#8217;s need for water is satisfied by the intake of other drinking liquids free from caffeine and alcohol, such as juices; fruits and vegetables, which are made of 80 to 95% water; meat products, which are made of 50% water; and cereals like rice and oats, which can contain as much as 35% water.</p>
<p>Fruit juices, on the other hand, have been scientifically proven to give certain health benefits, provided that they are taken in moderation. Nutritionists also suggest that fruit juices should be taken in their pure state, and people should only drink 100% fruit juice. Cranberry juice is believed to prevent urinary tract infections; grape juice is believed to lower the chances of blood clots in the heart; and orange juice is believed to prevent stroke and reduce the risk of heart attacks.</p>
<p>Though these popular beliefs have no scientific basis to their therapeutic claims, most scientists say that many fruit juices are indeed healthy to drink. Pure orange juice, for example, is very rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and folic acid. Other fruit juices that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and anthocynanins (water soluble pigments found in plants which act as antioxidants) include grape juice (purple), pomegranate juice, and cranberry juice. It is believed that juices that are made from fruits with rich colors such as grapes, pomegranates, cranberries, and blueberries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. New juices from black currants and Tahitian noni have also found their way in the international market.</p>
<p>Recent scientific studies have also claimed that the antioxidants found in most fruits and vegetable juices can help lower a person&#8217;s risks of developing Alzheimer&#8217;s disease. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in most plants and have the potential to help combat heart diseases and fight cancer.</p>
<p>Freshly squeezed juices from fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of minerals and vitamins which catalyze chemical reactions occurring in the body. These enzymes also produce the energy needed for digestion, absorption, and conversion of food into body tissues. An increased intake of fruit and vegetable juices ensures that the body will efficiently absorb more minerals and vitamins.</p>
<p>Another helpful benefit of fruits and fruit juices is their ability to promote detoxification in the human body. Fruits help to cleanse the body, especially those with high acid levels. <p>The trend in bodybuilding over the past many years has been to train one body part at a time, once a week.  While this protocol can be very effective, it often can lead to overtraining and it requires a heavy commitment of time.  If you find yourself too busy to make it to the gym 5-6 times per week or you feel that your body is overtrained and you need a refreshing change, the total body workout may be just the thing you need.</p>

<p>At first you may wonder how you can ever work your whole body in one workout.  After all, most people are so accustomed to performing 4-5 exercises per body part for around 12-20 sets that they cannot imagine properly training a body part with anything less.  This mindset must be opened up. In working your whole body in one workout, you will be performing only 1-2 exercises and 4-6 sets per body part.  However, the training frequency will be 3 times per week.</p>
<h2>Bodybuilding</h2>
<p>The total body workout involves a focus on basic, multi-joint movements.  These exercises stimulate the most response from the body in terms of not only the muscle fibres recruited, but also in the release of the necessary hormones to promote muscular growth.  Also, working all major muscle groups in one session will have a synergistic effect on your body&#8217;s response to the training session.  In short, your body should respond well to this type of training, especially if it is a drastic change from what you have been currently doing.</p>
<p>The key is to keep the training sessions relatively short (less than one hour) and intense.  Work the large muscle groups first (legs, chest, and back) and then the smaller muscle groups (shoulders and arms). By focusing on basic, compound movements you will provide your body with the maximum recruitment of muscle fibres in the shortest amount of time.  For example, when you train chest with bench or incline presses, you are also recruiting heavy work from the shoulders (especially the front deltoids) and triceps. This is efficient training. Combined with sufficient intensity, it will create really good results.</p>
<p>With this program, leg training simply cannot be neglected. The simple old-fashioned barbell squat is the best bodybuilding exercise, period. Regular intense squats performed in good form will stimulate muscular growth over your whole body.  As a matter of fact, most individuals would benefit from a routine focused on just squats, deadlifts, bench, bentover rows, and chins. These exercises work because they stimulate muscle growth.  These are what the old-time greats focused on.  So do them.</p>
<p>Here are the exercises recommended for the Total Body Workout:</p>
<p>Quads: Squats, Leg Press, Hack Squats</p>
<p>Chest: Bench press, Incline press, dips (presses may be performed with dumbbells or barbells)</p>
<p>Back: Deadlifts, Chins, Pulldowns, Bentover Rows, T-Bar Rows</p>
<p>For a sample workout, simply choose 1-2 of these basic movements for each body part and perform no greater than 6 sets. For example, a workout could consist of squats for 5&#215;5, bench press for 3&#215;8, incline press for 3&#215;8, chins for 3&#215;10 and bentover rows for 3&#215;8.  You get the idea?  It&#8217;s pretty straightforward.  By the way, a 5&#215;5 or 3&#215;8 protocols works really well for the total body workout.</p>
<p>You can follow these basic movements with the following isolation exercises:</p>
<p>Hamstrings: Lying or seated ham curls</p>
<p>Calves: Seated or standing calf raises</p>
<p>Shoulders: Shoulder Press (dumbbell or barbell), lateral or front raises</p>
<p>Arms: Dumbell or preacher curls, lying triceps extension, triceps pushdowns</p>
<p>Abs: Crunches</p>
<p>For the routine, simply choose 2-3 of these muscle groups and perform 2-3 sets of your favourite isolation exercise.  The next workout, do the other 2-3 muscle groups.  For example, if you did shoulders and arms one workout (at the end of your legs, chest, back routine) do hams, calves and abs the next workout.</p>
<p>The total body workout should be performed 3 times per week on alternate days. A Monday-Wednesday-Friday routine works well and it leaves the weekends free for you weekend warriors.  The important thing is to remember never to do the same exercise twice in a row.  So if you did squats, barbell bench and chins and barbell rows on Monday, change it to leg press, dumbbell incline press, pulldowns and deadlifts on Wednesday. This is an easy routine to follow.</p>
